Fairly Allocating Contiguous Blocks of Indivisible Items

چکیده

In this paper, we study the classic problem of fairly allocating indivisible items with the extra feature that the items lie on a line. Our goal is to find a fair allocation that is contiguous, meaning that the bundle of each agent forms a contiguous block on the line. While allocations satisfying the classical fairness notions of proportionality, envyfreeness, and equitability are not guaranteed to exist even without the contiguity requirement, we show the existence of contiguous allocations satisfying approximate versions of these notions that do not degrade as the number of agents or items increases. We also study the efficiency loss of contiguous allocations due to fairness constraints.

How to allocate hard candies fairly

We consider the problem of allocating a finite number of indivisible items to two players with additive utilities. We design a procedure that looks for all the maximin allocations. The procedure makes repeated use of an extension of the Adjusted Winner, an effective procedure that deals with divisible items, to find new candidate solutions, and to suggest which items should be assigned to the p...

How to Divide Things Fairly

We analyze a simple sequential algorithm (SA) for allocating indivisible items that are strictly ranked by n ≥ 2 players. It yields at least one Pareto-optimal allocation which, when n = 2, is envy-free unless no envy-free allocation exists. However, an SA allocation may not be maximin or Borda maximin—maximize the minimum rank, or the Borda score, of the items received by a player. Although SA...

The difficulty of fairly allocating divisible goods

It is often necessary to divide a resource among a number of agents, and to do so in a way that does not leave any of the agents feeling cheated. There are a number of published methods for dealing with the problem of fairly dividing goods. Many of these methods are very successful, capable of finding allocations that satisfy the participating agents and distribute the goods being disputed in a...

APX-Hardness of Maximizing Nash Social Welfare with Indivisible Items

We study the problem of allocating a set of indivisible items to agents with additive utilities to maximize the Nash social welfare. Cole and Gkatzelis [3] recently proved that this problem admits a constant factor approximation. We complement their result by showing that this problem is APX-hard.

Allocating Indivisible Resources under Price Rigidities in Polynomial Time

In many realistic problems of allocating resources, economy efficiency must be taken into consideration together with social equality, and price rigidities are often made according to some economic and social needs. We study the computational issues of dynamic mechanisms for selling multiple indivisible items under price rigidities. We propose a polynomial algorithm that can be used to find ove...
